2, Nigerian Studies
Malam Ahmad Muhammad is a Kano-based expert in Islamic medicine and
executive officer of Ahsan Islamic Chemist, Gwammaja. Explaining the
factors responsible for its appearance and rapid spread in Nigeria as
well as its overwhelming acceptance by both Muslims and non-Muslims,
Malam Ahmad said there had been rapid rise in the population of
Nigerians gaining Islamic knowledge, including the value of Islamic
medicine
Kano - Although Islamic medicines have been in use for centuries in
many countries across the globe, including non-Islamic countries,
little was known of Islamic medicine in Nigeria until some 20 years
back. The only alternative to orthodox drugs was the traditional
medicine. When Islamic medicine drew in gradually around 1992,
therefore, it came as a relief to many who had become disenchanted
with both the orthodox and traditional medicines.
